D – Duart Castle

Duart Castle, which was built in the 13th century, is located on the Isle of Mull off the Western coast of Scotland. You reach Mull via ferry from Oban.

Duart was the home of Clan Maclean from the time it was built until the end of the 17th century when Sir John Maclean (4th baronet) surrendered it to Campbell of Argyll. It was destroyed by Campbell and abandoned in the mid-18th century.

Clan Maclean regained possession in 1911 when Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean bought the castle and restored it.

Some people might recognize Duart from the 1999 film Entrapment which starred Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Connery is descended from Clan Maclean though his mother.

The castle was also featured in the 1971 film When Eight Bells Toll with Anthony Hopkins and used in the first half of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight.

Sorry the picture isn’t too good – it was rainy, of course. It rained every day I was in Scotland.
